Sister Martha Joseph Rooney
Sister Martha Joseph Rooney, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, died May 2. She was 91.
She was born in County Cork, Ireland, and entered the congregation in 1938. She earned a B.S. in nursing from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and an M.A. in nursing education St. Louis University in 1958.
She began her early years in teaching before moving into health care. She ministered 48 years in the Archdiocese of Seattle at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma, serving as supervisor, instructor, assistant administrator and director of the School of Nursing. Later she worked with the retired sisters at St. Ann Convent in Tacoma. In 2008 she became a resident of St. Ann Convent, and served in prayer minister until her death.
She is survived by many nieces.
A funeral Mass was celebrated May 9 at St. Ann Convent Chapel.
Ethel Arnold Madigan, a member of Our Lady of the Lake Parish, died April 16. She was 99.
She was born in Long Prairie, Minn., and moved to Seattle during World War II when her husband worked in defense. She worked as an office manager at Albert Balch Real Estate and Land Development for 31 years before retiring in 1988.
At Our Lady of the Lake, she was active with the church guild, the school board, and as a member of the Maids of Mary Guild for over 50 years. She also volunteered in her neighborhood and at St. Francis House. She enjoyed concerts, traveling and games. She wrote five books about her life as a record for her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin.
Survivors include her son, Robert; daughter, Betsy; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of the Lake Church.
