Foundation fundraiser in twelfth year of helping Catholic education in Western Washington

The Fulcrum Foundation’s 12th annual Celebration of Light event raised more than $1.3 million to support Catholic education in Western Washington, said Sue Mecham, the foundation’s managing director. The fundraiser was held Jan. 24 at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel.

The Fulcrum Foundation, established in 2002, provides financial assistance to Catholic schools and students in the Archdiocese of Seattle. This year, the foundation has funded grants for more than 1,500 students and 27 struggling schools.

“Catholic schools provide a unique and transformative education for our children, and the outstanding results from Celebration of Light demonstrate strong support for that mission,” Anthony Holter, Fulcrum’s executive director, wrote in an email. “Thanks to the generosity of our guests, a high quality Catholic education is within reach for thousands of children and their families, especially those who can least afford it.”

At the event, Attorney John Hempelmann and Jesuit Father Joseph P. Carver, president of the new Seattle Nativity School, were recognized as “Champions of Catholic Education” and spoke about the importance of Catholic education. Carol Mendoza, principal of St. Bernadette School in Burien, also spoke.

Richard and Mary Ann Boulanger received the “Archbishop’s Award,” which recognizes outstanding benefactors of Catholic schools. Music was provided by members of the St. James Cathedral Youth Music Program.
