Sister Germain Chabot, SP (Sister Germaine of the Seven Dolors) SEATTLE

Sister Germaine Chabot, a Sister of Providence for 80 years, died July 4. She was 98.

Born in Clarence Creek, Ontario, Canada, she entered the Sisters of Providence in November 1936 in Montreal, Quebec, and became a novice in May 1937. In November 1938 she professed first vows and received the name Sister Germaine of Seven Dolors, and in November 1942 she professed final vows.

Following her first profession in November 1938, she was missioned to Sacred Heart Province in Washington, where she worked for three years in the dietary unit at Mount St. Vincent, Seattle. From 1941-44 she was a staff assistant at Providence Medford Medical Center in Oregon; and St. Patrick High School in Walla Walla, where she graduated in June 1944. That August, she entered nurse training at St. Joseph Hospital in Vancouver, obtaining her nursing certification in August 1947.

For 45 years she served in nursing and administration, including at St. Joseph Hospital in Vancouver, Providence Hospital in Everett, St. Peter Hospital in Olympia and Providence Medical Center in Seattle.

On Aug. 6, 1965 she was formally accepted to the American College of Hospital Administrators, and in 1980 she received certification as a member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.

She enjoyed listening to music, art, calligraphy, sewing, knitting afghans and sweaters, walking, cooking and serving others. In 1992 she retired in Portland and in 2006 she moved to St. Joseph Residence, Seattle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her sister Jeanne Chabot and nieces.

A funeral Mass was celebrated July 10 at St. Joseph Residence.

Sister Patricia Ann Perko, BVM (Vincent de Paul) DUBUQUE, Iowa

Sister Patricia Ann Perko, a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary for 62 years, died July 12. She was 82.

Born in Butte, Montana, she entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1954, and professed first vows on March 19, 1957, and final vows on July 16, 1962.

In the Archdiocese of Seattle, she taught first and third grade and in the learning center at St. John School in Seattle. She also served in education in Nebraska, California and Montana, where she also ministered as nurse aide and in home health care. She was coordinator of religious education in San Francisco.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary Dresden.

She is survived by her brother, Michael; and nieces and nephews.

Earl J. Spangler SEATTLE

Earl Spangler, a member of St. Joseph Parish for more than 60 years, died June 18. He was 88.

He attended Seattle Preparatory School and played basketball at Seattle University, graduating in 1950. He served in the Army during the Korean War and attended St. Edward Seminary in Kenmore before marrying Alice Moore on Jan. 23, 1954.

He began his career as a junior high school teacher but soon switched to life insurance, eventually establishing Spangler Insurance.

He coached CYO basketball, supported Holy Names Academy and Seattle Prep and was active in revitalizing the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce. His retirement years were devoted to the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, which he served as a three-term president.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice; sons, Mark, Steve, Joe, David and Tom; daughters, Marry Abbott, Sue Laxdall, Peggy Cagle, Cathy Cordova and Jenny Clemons; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated July 11 at St. Joseph Church.

Patricia (Sweeney) Williams FEDERAL WAY

Patricia Williams, a recent member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish and a longtime member of St. Stephen the Martyr Parish in Renton, died June 30. She was 92.

Born in Seattle, she attended St. Alphonsus School and Holy Angels High School through 10th grade.

He was preceded in death by her husband, Stan; and seven older siblings.

She is survived by her daughters, Diane, Chris and Sharon; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
