Remembering the recently deceased in the Archdiocese of Seattle

Sister Joan (Marian Joan) McKenna, SNJMSPOKANE

Sister Joan McKenna, a member of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, died July 15 at Hospice House in Spokane. She was 85.

She was born in Fresno, California, and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Portland, Oregon. She joined the Sisters of the Holy Names in 1947. She earned a B.A. in math from Marylhurst University, a M.A. in math from the University of Detroit, and a Ph.D. in math from St. Louis University.

She began her teaching career in 1949 at Immaculate in Seattle and St. Francis High School in Eugene, Oregon. She also taught at Fort Wright College of the Holy Names and then at Spokane Falls Community College.

She was asked by her community to return to community service to implement her technology skills as director of computer services for the provincial department. In 1996 she added the responsibility for purchasing, licensing and upkeep of the fleet of province cars. In 2006 she retired because of her rheumatoid arthritis.

She used her creative eye as a photographer to identify every plant on the convent’s 57 acres, as well as compiling several books on flora. As a young woman she was athletic and especially enjoyed figure skating. During the Spokane Expo in 1974, she trained as an “accountant” to function at qualifying competitions. By 1985 she was an intermediate test judge and officiated at a number of national championships. She enjoyed European traveling and spoke French and German. 

A funeral Mass will be celebrated July 24 at 10 a.m. at the Convent of the Holy Names in Spokane.

Darlene TruccoSEATTLE

Darlene Trucco, a parishioner at St. James Cathedral, died July 11. She was 77.

She was born and raised in Tacoma before moving to Seattle as a young woman. As a member of St. James Cathedral, she enjoyed attending the 5:30 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass.

She is survived by her daughters, Amber, Monica, Anne and Dawn; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., July 31, at St. James Cathedral Chapel.

Patricia Mallett Wilson

SEATTLE

Patricia Mallett Wilson, a member of Our Lady of the Lake Parish, died May 28. She was 93. 

She was born and raised in Seattle, where she attended St. John School and Holy Names Academy. She worked as a telephone operator and attended college for a few years before getting married and raising her family. She had a talent for sewing and crafted many beautiful dresses and coats for the family. Her talents also were seen during holidays when she enjoyed decorating and cooking.

In the 1960s she worked as an office manager at University Congregational Church under the direction of Dr. Dale Turner. Later she worked for the King County Court system.

Throughout her life she was interested in golf, yoga, tap dancing and volunteering with St. Francis House. Her strong faith, Irish wit and indomitable spirit touched many lives.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bob Mallett and Woodrow Wilson; and stepson Neil Wilson. Survivors include her sons, Paul, John and James Mallett; daughters, Laurie Mallett, Jill Forcier, Barbara Frye, Susann McKenzie and Maggie Mallett; stepchildren Nancy Raschko and Jeanne Hyde; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated June 6 at Our Lady of the Lake Church.

Sister Ann Dolores Ybarrola, SP

SEATTLE

Sister Ann Dolores Ybarrola, a member of the Sisters of Providence, died July 1. She was 96.

She was born Catherine Ybarrola in Havre, Montana. After her mother’s death in 1928, the family moved to Great Falls, where she attended St. Thomas Home and graduated in 1936. In 1937 she entered the Sisters of Providence novitiate in Seattle and professed final vows in 1941.

She received a B.A. in English from the College (now University) of Great Falls, Montana, and an M.A. in education from Gonzaga University in Spokane. Her 50 years of ministry in teaching included schools in Montana, Idaho, Illinois and St. John School in Washington state. In 1966 she received a state of Montana secondary principal teaching certificate. Between 1957 and 1992 Sister Ann held administrative positions in Montana. 

In 1992 she retired in Great Falls, where she enjoyed reading, decorative painting and the outdoors. In 2015 she moved to St. Joseph Residence in Seattle.

She is survived by her brother, James; and sister, Rosemary Latino.

A funeral Mass was celebrated July 10 at St. Joseph Residence.

Sophie Virginia Frause

SEATTLE

Sophie Kopkas Frause, a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Burien, died July 19. She was 102. 

She was born in Hecia, Pennsylvania, and moved to Seattle from Cleveland, Ohio, many years ago. She worked in retail sales and was a member of the American Business Women’s Association.

She enjoyed cooking, crafts and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Frause. Survivors include her sons, Bob and Norm Frause; and three grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated July 30 at St. Francis of Assisi Church.
