Remembering the recently deceased in the Archdiocese of Seattle

Father Ward OakshottLYNNWOOD

Father Ward Oakshott, a priest of the Archdiocese of Seattle for nearly 40 years, died June 5. He was 76.

Born Sept. 11, 1940, in Colville, he was ordained a priest Nov. 6, 1977, by Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen.

He was pastor of St. Cecilia Parish on Bainbridge Island from 1991–95, and also served at St. Charles Borromeo in Tacoma (1978–80), Sacred Heart in Bellevue (1982–83), St. James Cathedral (1988–89), St. Frances Cabrini in Lakewood (1991) and Christ the King in Seattle (1999–2007).

He also served on staff at the American College of Louvain, Belgium (1980-82), in the archdiocesan Office of Worship (1983-88) and as a chaplain in AIDS ministry (1988-89). At the time of his death, he was in residence as a senior priest at St. Thomas More Parish in Lynnwood.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas More Church in Lynnwood.

Jim Julio BernovichFEDERAL WAY

Jim Bernovich, a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, died May 2. He was 90.

Born in Eatonville, he attended Eatonville High School and Clover Park Tech. He served in the Army from 1944–46. He worked as an airplane mechanic for United Airlines from 1951–88.

He was a member of an Elks Lodge, an Eagles Lodge, a Croatian Fraternal Lodge and the Federal Way Senior Center. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, fishing, watching sports and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Antonia; and wife, JoAnn.

He is survived by his sons, Jeffrey and Guy; brother, John; and two grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated May 13 at St. Vincent de Paul Church.

James D. HowardFEDERAL WAY

James Howard, a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, died April 24. He was 82.

Born in Seattle, he lived nearly his entire life in Western Washington, attending St. Anthony School in Renton and O’Dea High School in Seattle. He served in the Army from 1954–56, then completed a B.A. at Seattle University in 1960. He lived the last 47 years in Federal Way, where he was a public school teacher until 1991, after which he worked for the IRS for five years and as a tax preparer at Liberty Tax until his death.

At his parish, he was a lector and a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

He coached baseball and soccer when his sons were young, and he enjoyed golf, pickleball and salmon fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Margaret; and sister Christine Howard Brown.

He is survived by his wife, Nadine; sons, Dan, Tim, Vince, Chris and John; sister Mary Anne Hevly; and 11 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated May 20 at St. Vincent de Paul Church.
