Remembering the recently deceased in the Archdiocese of Seattle

Sister Mary Noreena (Mary Kate) Carr, SNJMSPOKANE

She was born and raised in Seattle and attended Holy Names Academy. She entered the congregation in 1939 and pronounced her vows in 1941 as Sister Mary Noreena. She earned a B.S. in education from Marylhurst College, an M.Ed. from Seattle University and a Ph.D. in education from Arizona State University.

She taught at schools in Seattle, Everett, Tacoma, Spokane and Portland and Salem, Oregon. She taught in the Education Department at Gonzaga University, at Fort Wright College and at Eastern State University.

She is remembered as a “consummate professional” who was fully prepared when she entered the classroom and expected the same from her students. She was a member of the Board of Examiners of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and a member of the Professional Standards Committee for International Reading. She received the President’s Award from the Washington Organization for Reading Development and was inducted into the WORD Hall of Fame.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated May 15 at the Convent of the Holy Names in Spokane.

She entered the Dominican Sisters of Tacoma in 1948 and for over 25 years taught in elementary schools in Washington and California.
