Remembering the recently deceased in the Archdiocese of Seattle

Margaret (Braun) BocekBURIEN

Margaret Bocek, a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, died Sept. 25. She was 94.

Born in Kewaskum, Wisconsin, she moved to Washington 76 years ago and lived the last 59 years in Burien. She earned two bachelor’s degrees: one in music, specializing in organ performance; and another in anthropology, which she received from the University of Washington in 1984.

Until her retirement in 2003, she was the organist at St. Francis of Assisi, where she was also involved with the St. Joseph’s circle.

She volunteered for the American Cancer Society and enjoyed music, gardening, cooking, camping and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark; and sister, Rosalie Staal.

She is survived by her sons, Joseph, Thomas and Peter; daughters, Barbara and Susan; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Oct. 7 at 11 a.m.

Sister Lily May Emert, SP (Sister Rose Theresa) SPOKANE

Sister Lily May Emert, a Sister of Providence for 71 years, died Sept. 16. She was 90.

Born in Seattle, she attended Providence Academy in Vancouver before moving to Spokane, where she graduated from Marycliff High School in 1945. She entered the Sisters of Providence in February 1946 at Mount St. Vincent, Seattle, and in August 1946 she became a novice. In February 1948 she professed first vows and received the name Sister Rose Theresa, and in February 1951 she professed final vows.

From 1955 to 1958 she attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy. In 1992 she completed the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Providence Medical Center, Portland. In 1993 she received her National Association of Catholic Chaplains certification.  

She ministered in pharmacy and pastoral care in Montana (1948-55 and 1958-68), Walla Walla (1969-91) and Spokane (1992-2016).

She enjoyed walking, nature, cooking, reading and spending time with family, friends and her sisters in community.

She is survived by her sister, Irene Simon; brother, Kenneth Emert; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 28 at Mount St. Joseph in Spokane.
