Pope creates 13 new cardinals, including Washington archbishop

VATICAN CITY — One by one 11 senior churchmen, including two U.S. citizens — Cardinals Wilton D. Gregory of Washington and Silvano M. Tomasi, a former Vatican diplomat — knelt before Pope Francis to receive their red hats, a cardinal’s ring and a scroll formally declaring their new status and assigning them a “titular” church in Rome.

Panamanian learned he'll be a cardinal when sister sent WhatsApp note 

MEXICO CITY - Cardinal-designate Jose Lacunza Maestrojuan of David, Panama, learned of his elevation to cardinal via his smartphone. His sister, living in Spain, sent him a short message via the instant messaging service WhatsApp asking, "You have nothing to tell me? The pope has made new announcements. This doesn't affect you?" the Spanish website teinteresa.es reported.
