A friendship with a member of Saint Martin’s Abbey led him to explore becoming a Benedictine, a process that began in 2010 and developed during the next two years. He was released by Archbishop J. Peter Sartain in mid-2012 to begin his discernment of the monastic life. He took his simple vows Aug. 15, 2013, at Saint Martin’s.
Since first joining the Saint Martin’s community, Father Nguyen has worked with its Benedictine Institute and the Saint Martin’s University Office of Institutional Advancement; he has also taught classes. For several months, he served St. Mary Parish in Anacortes. This month he begins doctoral studies on monastic spirituality at the Pontifical Atheneum of Sant’Anselmo in Rome.
Father Nguyen was born Qui-Thac Nguyen on Nov. 3, 1976, in Vietnam, the second of four children. When he was 4, his family escaped in a boat, which was raided by sea pirates and eventually landed in Thailand, where his family lived in a refugee camp for three years. They eventually began a new life in Everett, where Father Nguyen and his siblings attended Immaculate Conception School.
After graduating from O’Dea High School in Seattle, he was accepted as a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Seattle. He attended St. John Vianney Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, then studied in Rome at the Pontifical North American College, the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas.
