Below is the text of the homily Bishop George Thomas of Las Vegas delivered at the funeral Mass for Archbishop Emeritus Alexander J. Brunett February 12 at St. James Cathedral in Seattle.
SEATTLE – Every evening from October through April, Catholics at several local parishes quietly serve homeless men by giving them a warm place to sleep.
On the day of his appointment as archbishop of Seattle, September 3, Archbishop Paul D. Etienne celebrated Mass at St. James Cathedral with Archbishop Emeritus J. Peter Sartain and Auxiliary Bishops Eusebio Elizondo and Daniel Mueggenborg.
SEATTLE – After a beloved statue of Mary was vandalized at St. James Cathedral, the shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary has reopened with another statue temporarily in the place of honor.
SEATTLE – With his family and an estimated 1,000 people present, Archbishop Paul D. Etienne became coadjutor archbishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle during a June 7 Mass of Reception at St. James Cathedral.
SEATTLE – Archbishop J. Peter Sartain celebrated a “Red Mass” for members of the legal profession October 6 at St. James Cathedral. Approximately 80 people attended the Mass, including six judges and Lieutenant Governor Cyrus Habib. The Red Mass is a tradition in the Catholic Church that goes back to the 13th century.
SEATTLE – Claudia Gonzalez and her family traveled from North Bend to join their bishops and fellow Catholics in the October 4 Prayer of Repentance and Healing at St. James Cathedral.
