Remembering the recently deceased in the Archdiocese of Seattle

Sister Anne McCluskey (Mary Ricarda), SNJMSPOKANE

Sister Anne McCluskey, a member of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, died June 27. She was 93.

She was born in Seattle and attended Immaculate High School before entering the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary at Marylhurst, Oregon. She earned a B.M. in education from Marylhurst College and an M.M. in piano pedagogy from Eastern State College as well as national accreditation in piano. She taught in schools in Spokane, Portland, Astoria, Seattle and elsewhere.

In 1970 she began group teaching of piano. She studied at Columbia University Teacher’s College in New York and was such a successful promoter of the PACE method that she was invited to present classes and to conduct musicianship festivals all over the West Coast. In 1984 she retired from teaching but volunteered in internal ministry with her religious community as a provincial secretary and archives assistant.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral Mass will be celebrated July 11 at the Convent of the Holy Names in Spokane.

Finian RowlandSEATTLE 

Finian Rowland, a member of St. John the Evangelist and St. Alphonsus parishes, died June 25. He was 89. 

He was born in Pullamaria, Bofeenaun, County Mayo, Ireland, and immigrated to Seattle in 1950. He worked first in construction and then for 34 years for Pacific Northwest Bell. He was involved with Seattle’s Irish Heritage Club and at St. John Parish.

He was preceded in death by his sons Martin and Kevin and his granddaughter Siobhan Bitzer.

He is survived by his wife, Sally; son, Patrick; daughters, Ann Bitzer, Kathleen Rowland and Teresa O’Leary; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and brothers John and Eddie.

A funeral Mass was celebrated July 2 at St. John the Evangelist Church.
