Remembering the recently deceased in the Archdiocese of Seattle

Mary Elizabeth BischoffPORTLAND, Oregon

Mary Bischoff, a former member of the Sisters of Providence, died Feb. 11. She was 89.

She was born in Yakima and joined the Sisters of Providence in 1944. She earned a master’s degree in education and served at schools across the West, including as principal in the early days of St. Joseph School in Vancouver.

In 1969 she left the order and earned a second master’s degree, in clinical social work, then worked in the Los Angeles area. In 1982 she moved back to Yakima. She was associate director of children and family services at Comprehensive Mental Health Services before retiring in 1992. She then earned her third master’s degree, in pastoral ministry, from Gonzaga University in Spokane.

She developed the position of pastoral administrator at St. Joseph Parish in Yakima. In 1999 an arsonist destroyed the church. She worked tirelessly to see that the church was rebuilt, which it was in 2002.

In 2007 she moved to Portland to be with her sisters.

She is survived by her sisters Martha McMahon and Sister Margaret Bischoff and brother John.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 25 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Portland.

Terry McGlenoAUBURN

Terry McGleno, a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, died Feb. 12, of a heart attack. He was 66.

He was born in Minneapolis and lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, before moving to Washington state 32 years ago. He owned Statewide Painting.

He enjoyed riding his Harley, traveling, cooking and listening to music.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Campbell McGleno. Survivors include his sons, Corey and Travis; daughters, Amanda and Janice; six grandchildren; and his siblings, Kathy, Patsy, Mickey and Philip.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 25 at St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Sister Joann Groo, SNJMSPOKANE

Sister Joann Groo, a member of the Sisters of the Holy Names, died Jan. 25. She was 92.

She was born in Montpelier, Idaho, and grew up in Spokane. Before entering the Sisters of the Holy Names, she became a registered nurse at Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Spokane. She professed her religious vows in 1947.

She ministered as a nurse in Maryhurst, Oregon, and Seattle. In 1956 she was assigned to teach high school and served at Immaculate Conception and Holy Names Academy in Seattle.

In 1981 she began work at Sacred Heart Medical Center as a pastoral minister.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated March 10 at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Spokane.

Anita Mabanglo MayorFEDERAL WAY

Anita Mayor, a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, died Feb. 2. She was 83.

She was born in Natividad, Pangasinan, Philippines, and moved to Washington state more than 50 years ago. She received a B.S. with Medical Technology Certificate from the University of Washington. For 31 years she worked as a medical technologist at Auburn General Hospital.

At her parish, she was an extraordinary minister of holy Communion and a member of the Legion of Mary. She was also a pianist, international traveler and amateur astronomer.

She is survived by her husband, Romeo; son, Andrew; daughter, Rebecca Saxton; five sisters and two grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 18 at St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Father Thomas O’CallaghanBREMERTON

Father Thomas O’Callaghan, who served as pastor of parishes in Poulsbo, Seattle, Suquamish and Vancouver, died Feb. 16. He was 88.

He was born July 29, 1928, in County Cork, Ireland, and ordained to the priesthood June 6, 1954, at St. Kieran’s College in Kilkenny.

He served as an assistant at St. James in Vancouver (1954-58) and St. Patrick in Seattle (1958-64) and as pastor of St. Peter in Suquamish (1964-68), St. Olaf in Poulsbo (1968-73), St. James in Vancouver (1973-81) and Our Lady of Mount Virgin in Seattle (1982-89).

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Father Michael, Father Mattias, Jack and Mossie.

He is survived by his sister, Abina O’Callaghan.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 23 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church.

Nancy Vinci ZiccaAUBURN

Nancy Zicca, a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, died Jan. 30, of respiratory failure. She was 95.

She was born in Port Chester, New York, and moved to Washington state 50 years ago. She worked as a housekeeper at the Sea-Tac Hilton Inn before retiring in 1979. She enjoyed bingo, cooking and watching “The Price is Right.”

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Frank.

Survivors include her son, Peter; daughters, Maryann Maytum, Rose Vida and Paula Eby; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 15 at St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Sister Dorothy Zimmer, SP (Sister Elizabeth of Providence)SEATTLE

Sister Dorothy Zimmer, a member of the Sisters of Providence for 73 years, died Feb. 21. She was 98.

She was born and raised in Glentana, Montana. She entered the Sisters of Providence in 1943 at Mount St. Vincent in Seattle. She professed final vows in 1948. Before entering the Sisters of Providence, she worked as a nurse for three years. In 1948 she received her registered nurse certification from the state of Idaho.

From 1945-1978, Sister Dorothy was a registered nurse in several states. From 1978-1996 she served in pastoral care in Montana. In 1996 she retired to Mount St. Joseph in Spokane, where she volunteered in the archives office. She moved to St. Joseph Residence in Seattle in 2012.

She enjoyed handicrafts, swimming and crocheting.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 28 at Mount St. Joseph in Spokane.
