LACEY - Benedictine Brother Boniface (Victor) Lazzari, associate professor of Spanish at St. Martin’s University, was honored with an Oct. 25 gathering to mark 50 years of monastic service.

Born Oct. 26, 1941, in Sacramento, he enrolled at St. Martin’s in 1959, entered the seminary in 1962 and professed his vows on the feast of All Saints in 1964, according to a Nov. 27, 1964, article in The Catholic Northwest Progress.

From 1971-73, Brother Boniface lived in Mexico, where he received his master’s degree. From 1984-87, he studied at the Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, Spain. Since 1990, Brother Boniface has been director of Abbey Church Events, an annual concert and lecture series sponsored by St. Martin’s Abbey, a Benedictine monastery. He also is curator of the abbey’s Martin of Tours Collection of Pacific Northwest art.

Brother Boniface’s interest in the arts extends to the broader community. He sits on the Olympia Symphony Orchestra board (he served two terms as president) and is a member of the Western Arts Alliance and of Chamber Music America.
